Which is Better for the Eye Area – Regular Concealer or Specialty Under Eye Concealer?
Personally, I do not like the idea of having a separate product just for my occasional dark circles. But there are many under eye-specific concealers available!
Personally, I think most people are better off with a concealer that works for all purposes. If your skin tends to be dry, stick to a creamy formula. If your skin is more on the oily side, you are probably better off with a stick formula that includes a clay ingredient. If your skin has the texture of crepe paper, your most flattering products will be sheer and slightly reflective.
The only exception I might make is that if you really do have super dark circles, then you might want to consider a color correcting product in a light peach which will help neutralize the purplish tones. But generally speaking, most complexions do best with yellow-toned products.
A few extra notes on concealers in general:
- While we should choose a shade that is one to two shades lighter than our foundation, most people choose a shade that is considerably lighter than that. This is counter-productive and can potentially draw more attention to the area that you are trying to conceal. In the under eye area, you could end up with the reverse raccoon look.
- There is some debate on whether to apply foundation or concealer first. I'm of the opinion it is foundation then concealer. You may find that you have fewer spots that need concealing if you already have foundation on.
- You are probably already aware that your skin might need a different shade of foundation in the summer versus the winter. Make sure to update your concealer as well!
- Always set your concealer with translucent loose powder.
